Cities Need Supply & Demand Solutions

In both Europe and Canada, municipalities and industrial enterprises are feeling the pressure to decarbonize their energy—to have both a clean and stable energy ecosystem. Yet these entities have a dilemma. If they invest heavily in hydrogen vehicles and energy platforms, the supply of hydrogen does not exist. If they invest heavily in hydrogen production, the market for off takers is too early and immature. Zelk fills this market gap.

Process

1.

Zelk utilizes organic ranking cycle (ORC) systems for power production. This technology allows for exploitation of low-grade heat that otherwise would be wasted.

2.

A reasonable-size steel mill, cement factory or paper mill typically supplies 10-50 MW heat, allowing production of 1-5 MW baseload electricity.

3.

Zelk provides the technology to capture the waste heat and convert it into a low-cost source for electricity.

Waste Heat Hydrogen Innovations

Zelk produces low-cost hydrogen from industrial waste heat and biogas, mainly to power CO2-free transport. Our approach is inspired by circularity, sectorial coupling of the energy system and the ambition to use waste such as industrial waste heat and carbon dioxide as resources. The coupling to the waste heat and district heat sector enables us to produce cheap electricity for hydrogen production, and it also allows us to create more modern, efficient and resilient regional power systems. For us, using waste heat is a cornerstone for the decarbonization of heavy industry.

Decarbonizing Transport

Zelk creates a financially efficient and way to convert existing trucks, tractors and other diesel combustion engines to partial hydrogen operation. The transition to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by wholesale replacement of inventory is in most cases financially untenable. While facilitating the acquisition of new vehicles, our approach avoids these replacement costs, allowing many existing trucks and buses to run on clean hydrogen now.

Zelk works with municipalities to introduce hydrogen-based transport such as cars, garbage trucks, long-haul trucks, mining equipment, tractors, ships, and trains. We nurture these off-takers through:

  • Dual-combustion conversion technolog

  • Pilot projects with marine ships and mining / agriculture sectors

  • Partnerships with OEMs like Volvo and Toyota to offer next-gen vehicles

  • Partnerships with ports working to decarbonize

Economically Efficient

Zelk uses waste heat to fuel electrolysis to produce hydrogen. This means that hydrogen is created where it will be used, eliminating the need to store and transport hydrogen from creation plants to where transport fleets are located.
